Phos Hilaron: Hail Gladdening Light!

Hail Gladdening Light
Of His pure glory poured
Who is the Immortal Father, Heavenly Blest
Holiest of Holies, Jesus Christ our Lord

Now we are come to the sun's hour of rest
The lights of evening 'round us shine
We hymn the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit Divine

Worthiest art Thou, at all times to be sung
With undefiled tongue
Son of our God, Giver of life alone
Therefore, in all the world Thy glories Lord
Thine own

PRAISE YOU MAKER OF ALL THE EARTH, ALL THE HEAVENS AND ALL THE HEAVENLY HOSTS!!!!!
HAIL GLADDENING LIGHT, JESUS CHRIST!!! THY GLORIES ARE THINE OWN!

This ancient Christian prayer-hymn, dating from the 3rd century or even earlier, was sung at the lighting of the lamps at evening time.

The prayer is addressed to Jesus Christ, the 'Light of the World', who reveals to us the glory of God the Father.

(This translation is by the 18th century poet John Keble. It is done insanely powerfully by Passion in their "Hymns Ancient and Modern" album. Thanks for sending it to me Shawn!!!)

(n.b. the accompanying photos are mostly taken at Winchester Cathedral, England--except for the one of the pillared nave with the great stain-glass window, which is Wells Cathedral)

'Love bade me welcome, yet my soul drew back, Guilty of dust and sin. But quick-ey'd Love, observing me grow slack From my first entrance in, Drew nearer to me, sweetly questioning If I lack'd anything.

"A guest," I answer'd, "worthy to be here"; Love said, "You shall be he." "I, the unkind, the ungrateful? ah my dear, I cannot look on thee." Love took my hand and smiling did reply, "Who made the eyes but I?" "Truth, Lord, but I have marr'd them; let my shame Go where it doth deserve." "And know you not," says Love, "who bore the blame?" "My dear, then I will serve." "You must sit down," says Love, "and taste my meat." So I did sit and eat.' ~George Herbert, Love III

Geek? Yes, but at least I got social skills.
You probably work in computers, or a history deptartment at a college. You never really fit in with the "normal" crowd. But you have friends, and this is a good thing.
